The Biotechnicum (BCC) is a biotechnology facility aimed at the development of proprietary industrial strains, fermentation and bioconversion processes for the production of commercially interesting proteins, metabolites and enzyme.

The development of new biotech products and processes requires more and more highly skilled personnel and high-tech structures and instruments.

The “classic” research labs, both academic and of small and medium enterprises, generally do not have the proper facilities for this aim. As a consequence, while it is, generally speaking, possible to develop new products, it is very hard to implement a production process. The major obstacles are:

- difficulties associated to the development of the producing organism

- inability to obtain high concentrations of biomass of the producing organism

- inability to obtain high concentrations of the final product

- high costs and low speed of the production process

- inefficient procedures for the purification of the product

- lack of valid information for the transfer from lab scale to the semi-production scale

BBC aims at solving these difficulties making more efficient the development phase, pointing out since the beginning obstacles and difficulties that typically come out only later in the production process, with evident increment of costs and time.

The benefits at the industrial level involve at least two aspects:

(A)  Reduction of the risk connected to the development of new products. The ability of a lab to produce a new product on a bigger scale strongly reduces the risk for an industry to develop a new product. The development at the BBC level allows not only to highlight the difficulties connected with the production itself, but it provides also indications useful for the subsequent steps, increasing the amount of information available to the industry that will produce the molecule of interest on a bigger scale. It is evident that this risk reduction favours the technology transfer, filling a typical gap between academy and industry.

(B)  Services offered to small and medium enterprises. The development phase represents a natural barrier for small and medium enterprises and biotech start-up companies. The ability to delegate these services to a third party reduces the costs, allowing the enterprises to embark in the production process and sales of more products. In addition, the strong connection of BBC with the University structures makes BBC a promoter for the creation of new start-up companies.

BBC is particularly strong in services that require an integrated multidisciplinary approach. The main focuses are on those areas which require a combined know-how of bioprocess technology, microbiology and biochemistry applied to industrial biotechnology processes. In this position BBC is able to assist in the selection, modification and development of microrganims, “scaling-up” and “scaling down” of production processes.

All the operations are carried out in GLP (Good Laboratory Practice) and GMP-like (Good Manufacturing Practice) environment.

BBC finds solutions to your problems that are not just academic, but also have a practical value. From the analysis of your challenges, we can design new processes and new commercial opportunities.
