The department has been founded in 1999 and employs about 230 people among docents, researchers, technical and administrative personnel. The department has wide competences in the field of biotechnology and biosciences, both in academic and applied research. The presence of chemists, biochemists, physicists, biologists, molecular biologists, botanist, zoologists etc allows for a multidisciplinary approach to wide thematic areas. The department hosts modern research labs with sophisticated instrumentations, several large instruments (mass spectrometry, NMR, several flow cytometers and cell sorters, a confocal fluorescent microscope etc) and a bio-informatics lab. Additionally the Department hosts the lab called “Rita Levi Montalcini”, whose director is the Noble prize herself.

The academic and research activities are documented by more than 100 scientific publications and 15 PhD thesis (2008 data).

BtBs hosts about 2000 students of first and second level degree in Biology, Biotechnology and Bioinformatic degree.
